It is impossible to overstate the impact of both fire and water on the American West.
AxS Festival 2011 is proud to present FIRE SEASON, a conversation between William Deverell, Professor of History and Director of the Huntington-USC institute on California and the West, and Philip Connors, acclaimed author and ardent wilderness look-out in the American Northwest.
Deverell and Connors will discuss how FIRE and WATER have shaped the region – its politics, its economy and the lives of all of us living in the region, in fire zones and flood plains.
Bill Deverell has spent his academic career exploring the history and culture of California. His research interests including the American West after the Civil War and the environmental history of Los Angeles.
Phil Connors will recount his days and nights keeping watch over one of the most fire-prone forests in the country. He will reflect on our place in the wild and the ongoing debate over wild fires in the natural ecology and whether they should be suppressed or left to burn.
